High and low tide at a glance

The ferry pulling out of Lewes, the long low line of the marsh, and in late spring a beach turned over entirely to horseshoe crabs and the birds that follow them. Delaware Bay is a working bay with a wild heart.

Where the Delaware River meets the Atlantic between New Jersey and Delaware, the bay forms one of the great estuaries of the East Coast. Its beaches host the largest spawning of horseshoe crabs on earth each spring, and the migrating shorebirds that time their journey to it, while shipping traffic runs up the channel toward Philadelphia.

The Delaware Bay Tide & Time Clock begins the same way every one of our charts does, with a bathymetric survey laser-cut into high-quality Baltic Birch. The water is hand-stained a beautiful greyish-blue against the natural birch of the land, and the roads, landmarks and depth contours are etched into the surface. Sixteen and a half inches across, it tracks the hour and the tide on one face.

What is a tide clock and how does it work? Fun facts: the lunar day is 24 hours and 50 minutes long, and the moon is the biggest influence on the tides. Since there are two high tides each lunar day, our tide clocks rotate every 12 hours and 25 minutes. Quartz tide clocks are perfect for the more predictable tides of the Eastern United States. You can set yours with a quick search for the next high tide in your area, or reset it monthly at the full or new moon.

Keep the bay and its tides where you can see both.
